10 Tips for Pouring the Perfect Beer

  1. Find a nice, clean, clear glass with a wide mouth.

  2. Slowly remove the cap from the bottle

  3. Tilt the glass at a slight angle and slowly pour the beer down the side of the glass.

  4. If the beer has a great deal of foam, tilt the glass further

  5. If the beer has less of a head, hold the glass straight up, and pour the beer down the center

  6. Adjust the angle of the glass and pour the beer quickly enough to get three fingers of foamy head when the glass is full

  7. Take several deep sniffs of the delicious beer bouquet.

  8. Take a small sip, and swirl it around on your tongue while tasting as many flavors as possible.

  9. Make a chewing motion with your mouth as you swallow to fully appreciate the beer flavor.

  10. Drink the beer and enjoy!

The Difference Between Ale and Lager

Most beer falls into two categories: ale or lager. The difference is the type of yeast used in the brewing. Yeast is important in beer flavor and converts sugar into alcohol and carbon dioxide (beer bubbles).

Ale yeast works at the top of the brew at warm temperatures (around 60 F).  Ales are sometimes called top-fermented beers. They are fruity, sweet, and complex in flavor.

Lager yeast works at the bottom of the brew and at cold temperatures (around 33 F). Lagers are sometimes called bottom-fermented beers.  They are clean, crisp, soft, dry, and refreshing.  Lager has a less complex flavor than ale

Top Seven Beer Styles

PILSNER: A golden Lager originally from the Czech Republic.  Pilsner has a sweet malt flavor, perfumy hop bouquet, and hop bitterness.

PALE ALE: A copper-colored ale with strong hop flavors and aromas originally from England. BOCK: A strong, rich, malty lager from Bavaria, Germany.  It is often dark, nut not always.

WHEAT BEER: Mild, refreshing ale brewed with wheat and barley.  Wheat beer is sometimes enjoyed with a slice of lemon.

PORTER: Medium-bodied, deep reddish-brown ale with a pleasant roasty flavor.  Originally brewed in London and thought to be favored by porters to produce markets.

AMERICAN LAGER: Pale, yellow, fizzy beer with very low hop flavor.  American lager is the style favored by America’s giant national breweries.

STOUT: A roasty dark-brown to black ale with coffee-like flavors.  Several styles are native to England and Ireland.

The Brewing Process

  1. Malted Barley is soaked in hot water to release the malt sugars.
  2. Hops are added to the malt sugar solution during the boiling process.
  3. The brew is cooled, and yeast is added for fermentation
  4. The yeast ferments the sugar, which releases CO2 and ethyl alcohol
  5. The beer is aged about 7 to 28 days
  6. The beer is ready for clarification and packaging

NOTE: Process is altered for each type of beer
